If you happen to find yourself in downtown Detroit, you cannot leave without at
least a look at “Ford Field”, the place that the “Detroit Lions” call their
home. Precast concrete proved to be the most efficient way to reduce
construction time and cost, and at the same time achieve an elegant and
attractive look for the building that quickly became one of Detroit’s landmarks.
Part of the project includes the rehabilitation and restoration of the old
Hudson’s Warehouse which featured a concrete structure dating as far back as
1930. The architectural brick clad precast panels, which included over 1 million
individual brick units also incorporated an insulated sandwich system. This
enabled designers to eliminate the need for any interior finishes. Additionally,
the exterior precast system was designed to bear completely off of new
foundations thus eliminating the need to add any gravity supports to the
existing concrete frame.
