Situated prominently on a corner
lot, the Southwestern Career Academy wanted their new building to look more like an office building than a school. A career-technical high school, the structure needed both single story space and high bay space for varied vocational programs.

A simple compact floor plan was generated to be cost effective and easy to navigate. The load-bearing insulated precast concrete wall panels created a look not usually seen in schools with the energy efficiency necessary to this type of construction. The design incorporates two different colors and a reveal pattern on a 4 ft x 4 ft grid.

The insulated precast concrete wall panels were also selected because of their flexibility, allowing the building to be increased in size or to be modified with little effort. Using precast also shortened the construction process by approximately four months.

Technical Note: This 130,000 square foot project encompasses load-bearing insulated precast concrete wall panels for all exterior walls and several interior walls. The panels are 8’ wide by either 14’ or 28’ tall.
